Tiggerific Tuesday Trivia – Walt Disney Quality

Tiggerific Tuesday Trivia – Walt Disney Quality

Disney World Refurb Sign

“We don’t make movies to make money, we make money to make more movies.”  – Walt Disney

“Disneyland is a work of love. We didn’t go into Disneyland just with the idea of making money.” – Walt Disney

One of the reasons that I fell in love with Disney was their commitment to quality and how they never compromise on it.   This commitment was all started with Walt.   I love hearing the story of when Walt wanted the Sleeping Beauty Castle spires to sparkle.   No, this could not be done with paint or anything else in Walt’s eyes; this had to be 22 karat gold.   But his brother Roy, the money thinking side of Disney, wanted no part in the cost of real gold on the castle.   Since Walt was not willing to compromise he sent Roy away on business and while he was gone went ahead and had real 22 karat gold applied to the castle spires.   Gold still adorns the castle today.   This commitment to quality made Disney what it is today.

After Walt’s death, Roy picked up the Disney World project with many of the directions already set in place by Walt.   There were a few things that could have been changed early in the project to save money, but Roy now understood Walt’s quality commitment and went along with his brothers previous plans.   One of these was the location of the Magic Kingdom.   The accountants at Disney were arguing that the location should be at the intersection of two highways at the front of the property.  This would save the Disney company time and millions of dollars.   Walt’s plan called for the Magic Kingdom to be at the back of the property bringing the guests slowly through the property.   You know the decision Roy made.

Another of these decisions came with the location of the parks services.   They could go with backstage buildings or put many of the services under the park similar to what Walt had proposed for EPCOT.   Meetings were held and again the accountants wanted to save money.   $5 million is what it would cost and that was a big chunk of change at that time.   Again, you know the decision that was made.

Which brings us to our trivia question this week….

How high was the land raised so that the utilities/services for the Magic Kingdom could be “underground”
A. 4 feet
B. 8 feet
C. 16 feet
D. 20 feet

Magic Kingdom

Overtime many companies fall victim to sacrificing quality to make more money which is always only a short term win.   I hope the Disney company continues to learn from the man who started it all and keep their quality standards high.

The answer this week is C – the ground had to be raised 16 feet so that the utilities/services could exist under the ground at the Magic Kingdom.   Over 8 million cubic yards of dirt had to be moved forming a 200 acre lagoon.

“Whatever you do, do it well. Do it so well that when people see you do it they will want to come back and see you do it again and they will want to bring others and show them how well you do what you do.” – Walt

We’re having a party!! Walt Disney World is going to party all year long… Come on everybody, jump into the beat and put your hands up…. Havin a party….

How many of you remember that song from the Walt Disney World 15 Years of Magic parade. That song has stuck in my head for many years, so anytime I have a party I have to bring it out. I might not have all the lyrics right, but it’s still fun.

What is a Disney @Home Celebration, you might ask?   Well, we all have a #DisneySide and who doesn’t love a party? Combine the two and… bang, pow, boom! A Disney Side Celebration is born.    Disney Side Celebrations  helps bring the #DisneySide out in all of us by supplying ideas, themes, recipes, activities, and more to make your Disney celebration the best.    Be sure to check out their website for more details and ideas. http://www.disneysidecelebrations.com/

So, yes, we’re having a party, come on everybody jump into the beat and put your hands up….   I can’t wait to share all our party pictures with everyone, but first here is the package that arrived to wake up our #DisneySide and help plan our celebration.

Box Arrival…..

DisneyDayByDay DisneySide 1

As we opened the box we were excited to see all of our celebration supplies packed nicely in an American Tourister DeLITE Spinner.   Yes, it’s purple… I know. But I’m man enough to show my purple DisneySide and I will definitely use this for our trip to Disney next month.   Did you know that American Tourister is the Official Luggage of Walt Disney World and Disneyland resorts? One of the highlights of this suitcase is that its weight is only 8.4 lbs. Of course this will help with all the increased baggage fees that continue to rise.   But don’t let the light-weight fool you. This luggage is sturdy, and made with high quality materials. I’ll let you know how it holds up on upcoming trips.

It’s a lot to take in, I know.   As we began to explore the kit, our excitement built and we started to dream about our party theme.   In the kit you’ll find everything you need to plan your party. Just add people, food, and your own bit of pixie dust.    Here are more details on what we found inside….

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse party supplies, including swirl decorations, cups, plates, tablecloth, and cupcake holders.   Looks like someone will be having cupcakes at their party.

DisneyDayByDay DisneySide 5

Also included were measuring cups, cookie cutters, and recipe cards to help you whip something up for the party, or to include in baking activity.    The picture below called “So this is Love” by Will Gay (creative director at Disney’s Yellow Shoes) was also part of the package. We love the print and can’t wait to give them to our guests!

The kit also included RunDisney Cheer cards, Craisins from Ocean Spray , and HP Photo Card pack… which we plan to use for our invitations and as party mementos.   Disney stickers, tattoos and bingo cards can also be seen in the photo below.
