This weeks favorite food comes to you from the beautiful Hawaiian Resort of Aulani. When we first arrived we were very hungry from our trip so we were glad to see a quick service location right next to the pool. Mama’s features a small menu but has a great location when you are swimming or lounging on the lazy river.
As many say the food in Hawaii can be expensive, but we found Mama’s to be reasonable and the food was always fresh and very tasty. The local red frank was an all beef hot dog served “Puka” style. Puka is the Hawaiian word for “hole” and refers to the naturally occurring hole in the middle of these rounded shell fragments. The bun is not cut lengthwise, no way not in the land of paradise, instead there is a hole down the center of the bread in which the frank is inserted. This makes them easy to hold and woof down before jumping back in the pool or ocean.

That’s so cool! how do they make the hole in the bun? Are there bun holes like we have donut holes? #mystified!
Hot dogs again?! I am intrigued by the bun, though!
Cool! Sounds like a much less messy way to eat a hot dog!
My husband would love those. I’m also intrigued by the bun. 🙂
It sounds like it would be such a neater way to serve hot dogs. My kids always end up with condiments dripping down their little elbows.
